Water jet propulsion (also pump jet propulsion, pump jet propulsion, jet propulsion, waterjet propulsion) is a propulsion unit with recoil propulsion for high speeds.

Over high-speed and light gasoline or diesel engines or gas turbines, an impeller is driven, the water sucks under the fuselage and ejects via moving nozzles at the rear again.
Compared to the classic watercraft with propeller drive, jet-powered watercraft can be built and operated extremely flat, and are extremely manoeuvrable even at the slowest speed.
The cavitation only starts at much higher flow velocities than with an open propeller, since the pressure conditions on the blade of an impeller in the jet propulsion correspond to those of a pump.
As a result, the operation of a jet propulsion system entails considerably less vibration and noise than that of a conventional propulsion plant. Another advantage of the jet propulsion system is that in heavy seas, the thrust does not have to be reduced when the nozzle suddenly comes out of the water due to a wave lift as long as the water intake can draw enough water. In contrast, a conventional drive can damage or even destroy this effect if the drive turns too high due to the suddenly missing water resistance. A jet-propelled watercraft can travel much faster in heavy seas than a comparable conventional drive.
